Dandruff vs dry scalp is a common puzzle, because both leave white flakes on your shoulders and both can itch. They are close to opposites, though. Dandruff is linked to oil, while a dry scalp lacks it. Treating one as if it were the other often makes things worse.
What dandruff is
Dandruff is a very common scalp condition in which skin cells are shed faster than usual. It is thought to involve a yeast called Malassezia, which lives on everyone's scalp and feeds on oil, together with the scalp's own sensitivity to it. Dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene, and it is not contagious. A more severe form, with red, greasy, scaly patches, is called seborrhoeic dermatitis.
What dry scalp is
A dry scalp is simply dry skin on the head. The skin does not hold enough moisture, so it becomes tight and sheds small, dry flakes. It often appears together with dry skin elsewhere on the body.
How to tell them apart
| Sign | Dandruff | Dry scalp |
|---|---|---|
| Flake size | Larger | Small and fine |
| Flake color and feel | White or yellowish, oily | White, dry and powdery |
| Scalp | Oily, sometimes red | Tight, dry |
| Hair | Often greasy at the roots | Often dry |
| Other areas | Flaking may affect eyebrows, sides of the nose, behind the ears | Dry skin on arms, legs or face |
| Season | Any time; often worse in winter or under stress | Worse in cold, dry weather |
| After washing more often | Usually improves | Usually gets worse |
A simple check
Apply a light moisturizer or a few drops of a plain oil to a small area of your scalp before bed and wash it out in the morning. If the flaking in that area is much better, dryness is the likely cause. If nothing changes, or the scalp feels greasier, dandruff is more likely.
Caring for dandruff
- Use an anti-dandruff shampoo. Look for active ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, piroctone olamine, salicylic acid or coal tar.
- Massage it into the scalp and leave it on for the time stated on the label, usually a few minutes, before rinsing.
- Use it as often as the label says, then less often once the flakes are under control.
- Wash your hair regularly. Leaving oil on the scalp tends to make dandruff worse.

Caring for a dry scalp
- Wash less often, with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo.
- Use lukewarm water, not hot.
- Apply conditioner, and consider a scalp serum or light oil on dry patches.
- Limit styling products that contain a lot of alcohol.
- Use a humidifier if the air at home is very dry.
Other causes of a flaky scalp
Flakes do not always mean dandruff or dryness.
- Product build-up leaves residue that looks like flakes. See Scalp Buildup: Causes and Cleansing Tips.
- A reaction to a hair product causes an itchy, red, flaky scalp.
- Scalp psoriasis causes thicker, silvery scales on well-defined red patches.
- A fungal infection can cause scaly patches with hair loss, mainly in children.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor or dermatologist if flakes continue after about a month of regular care, if the scalp is very red, swollen or painful, if you have thick scaly patches, or if you notice hair loss. Persistent Scalp Flaking: When to See a Dermatologist explains what to expect. If itching is the main problem, see Itchy Scalp: Common Causes and Care Options. An oily scalp without flakes needs a different approach, which is covered in Oily Scalp Care: A Simple Washing Routine.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have dandruff and a dry scalp at the same time?
It is possible, especially if harsh treatment of dandruff has dried the skin. Alternate an anti-dandruff shampoo with a gentle moisturizing one and condition the lengths.
Does oiling the scalp cure dandruff?
No. Oil can soften dry flakes, but dandruff is linked to oil and yeast, so heavy oiling may make it worse. A dandruff shampoo is the proven treatment.
Is dandruff caused by not washing enough?
Dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene, but washing too seldom lets oil and skin cells build up, which makes flakes more visible.
