Press-on nails give you a finished manicure in about 15 minutes, with no drying time and no lamp. Modern sets look convincing and can last from a couple of days to two weeks, depending on how you attach them. Good sizing and preparation decide how well they stay on. Careful removal decides what your own nails look like afterwards.
What comes in a set
Most kits contain 24 to 30 nails in a range of sizes, plus some of the following: adhesive tabs, nail glue, a small file, a cuticle stick and an alcohol wipe.
Tabs or glue?
| Adhesive tabs | Nail glue | |
|---|---|---|
| Wear time | 1 to 5 days | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Removal | Easy | Needs soaking |
| Kind to natural nails | Very | Less, especially if removed roughly |
| Nails reusable | Yes | Often, if removed carefully |
| Best for | An event or a weekend | Longer wear |
Step 1: Size every nail
- Lay out the nails and try one on each finger before using any adhesive.
- The press-on should cover the nail from side to side without touching the skin.
- If you are between sizes, choose the smaller one, or file the sides of the larger one to fit. A nail that overlaps the skin lifts and catches.
- Line the chosen ten up in order.
Step 2: Prepare your natural nails
- Remove old polish.
- Trim your nails short and file them.
- Ease back the cuticles gently. Any skin on the nail plate stops the adhesive from bonding.
- Lightly buff the surface to remove shine. A few gentle strokes are enough.
- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
- Wipe each nail with the alcohol pad, or with rubbing alcohol on a lint-free pad. Do not touch the nails afterwards.
This is the same preparation as for polish. See How to Prepare Nails for Nail Polish.
Step 3: Apply
With adhesive tabs
- Choose a tab that fits the nail and press it onto your natural nail.
- Peel off the top film.
- Follow the pressing steps below.
With glue
- Apply a thin layer of glue to your natural nail and a small drop to the back of the press-on, where it will sit on the nail. Too much glue seeps out onto the skin.
- Work on one nail at a time.
Pressing on
- Hold the press-on at a 45-degree angle, with its base just meeting your cuticle line.
- Lower it onto the nail, from the cuticle towards the tip. This pushes out air.
- Press firmly on the center, then pinch the sides, for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Wipe away any glue that escapes straight away with a cuticle stick.
Apply the thumbs last. You need them for pressing.
Step 4: Shape and finish
Clip and file the press-ons to the length and shape you like. See How to File and Shape Your Nails. Avoid water for at least an hour, and ideally two, while the bond sets.
Making them last
- Apply them in the evening, so that the adhesive sets overnight.
- Wear gloves for washing dishes and cleaning.
- Keep oils and creams away from the cuticle edge for the first day.
- Do not use the nails as tools.
- Carry a few spare nails and tabs or glue.
Removing press-ons
Never pull or pry them off. That strips layers from your natural nails.
Tabs
- Soak your fingertips in warm, soapy water with a little oil for 10 minutes.
- Slide a cuticle stick gently under the side edges.
- Lift off slowly. Soak for longer if a nail resists.
Glue
- Soak in warm, soapy water with oil for 15 to 20 minutes, then work cuticle oil under the edges and wiggle gently.
- If they still hold, use acetone: soak a cotton pad, place it over the nail, wrap in foil and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Acetone will damage the press-ons, so use this method only if you do not plan to reuse them. See Acetone vs Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover.
- Buff away leftover glue very lightly, or dissolve it with remover.
Afterwards, wash your hands and apply cuticle oil and hand cream.
Reusing press-ons
Peel old tabs or glue residue from the back, wipe the nails with alcohol and store them in their tray in size order. Clean any tools you used. See How to Clean and Store Nail Tools.
Looking after your natural nails
- Take a break of a few days between sets.
- Keep your own nails short underneath.
- Do not apply press-ons over damaged, infected or lifting nails.
- If a press-on becomes loose, remove it. Water trapped underneath can lead to a green discoloration from bacteria.
Safety with nail glue
Nail glue bonds skin in seconds. Keep it away from your eyes and mouth, and from children. If fingers stick together, soak them in warm, soapy water and ease them apart gently. Do not pull. Seek medical help if glue gets into the eyes. Some people develop an allergy to nail adhesives, with itching, redness or swelling around the nails. Stop using the product and see a doctor if this happens.

Frequently asked questions
How long do press-on nails last?
With adhesive tabs, about one to five days. With glue and good preparation, one to two weeks.
Do press-on nails damage your natural nails?
Not if they are removed gently by soaking. Damage comes from pulling them off, or from heavy buffing before application.
Can I shower with press-on nails?
Yes, once the adhesive has set for a couple of hours. Long, hot baths and washing dishes without gloves shorten their life.
