Easy Nail Art Ideas for Beginners

Ten simple nail art designs that need little skill or equipment, with household tools you can use and tips for a neat finish.

Easy nail art ideas are the best way to start decorating your nails, because they forgive a shaky hand. You do not need a special kit. A toothpick, a bobby pin and some tape can make most of the designs below. Begin with one accent nail, and add more as your confidence grows.

Before you begin

Nail art sits on top of a base color, so good groundwork matters.

  1. Prepare your nails and apply a base coat. See How to Prepare Nails for Nail Polish.
  2. Paint two thin coats of your base color. See How to Apply Nail Polish Evenly.
  3. Let the base dry completely, at least 15 to 20 minutes. Designs dragged across tacky polish smear.
  4. Have remover, cotton swabs and a small brush ready for corrections.
  5. Finish every design with a top coat, once the art is dry.

Ten easy designs

1. The accent nail

Paint one nail on each hand, usually the ring finger, in a different color or in glitter. It takes no extra skill.

2. Polka dots

Dip a bobby pin in polish and press dots onto a dry base. Space them evenly, or scatter them. Dot Nail Art: An Easy Tutorial for Beginners has a full tutorial.

3. A single stripe

Paint one thin vertical line down the center of each nail with a liner brush, or use striping tape. See Striped Nail Art: A Step-by-Step Guide.

4. Glitter tips

Dab glitter polish along the tip of each nail and fade it towards the middle with fewer dabs. There is no line to get right.

5. Simple French tips

Paint a thin band of color along the free edge. A colored tip on a bare or nude base looks modern and hides growth.

6. Half-moon

Leave a small curve bare at the base of the nail, or paint it in a contrasting color. A round sticker placed at the cuticle before painting makes a neat guide.

7. Color block

Place a strip of tape diagonally across a dry base, paint the exposed half in a second color, and peel the tape away while the polish is still wet.

8. Tiny hearts

Place two dots side by side and drag each down to a point with a toothpick.

9. Dot flowers

Make five small dots in a circle and a sixth of another color in the center. See Floral Nail Art: Simple Flower Designs to Try.

10. Mismatched pastels

Paint each nail a different shade from the same color family. It looks like a design and needs no art skills.

Tips for a neat result

  • Use small amounts. Put a drop of polish on a piece of foil and dip your tool into that.
  • Work on your non-dominant hand first to learn the movement, or keep the design simpler on the hand you find harder.
  • Rest both hands on the table.
  • Less is more. One dot or stripe placed well looks better than a crowded nail.
  • Let each layer dry before adding the next.
  • Float the top coat. Use a generous bead and let it glide over the design without pressing, so that the art does not smear.

Fixing mistakes

  • A wet mistake can be lifted with a toothpick or a cotton swab dipped in remover.
  • A dry mistake can be covered with a dot, a stripe or a little glitter.
  • If one nail goes badly wrong, remove it and make it your accent nail.

Choosing colors

Two or three colors are enough. A neutral base with one bright accent is the easiest combination. Nail Art Color Combinations: How to Choose a Palette explains how to build a palette, and the Nail Art Planner helps you to plan a design and a list of supplies. If your nails are short, see Minimalist Nail Art for Short Nails for designs that suit them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest nail art for a complete beginner?

An accent nail, glitter tips and polka dots are the easiest, because none of them needs a straight line.

Do I need special tools for nail art?

No. A toothpick, a bobby pin, tape and a makeup sponge are enough to begin.

How long should I wait before adding nail art over my base color?

At least 15 to 20 minutes, until the base is dry to a light touch. For tape designs, wait longer, so that the tape does not lift the polish.
