To remove long-lasting lipstick, you need to dissolve it, not scrub it. Long-wear, liquid matte and stain formulas are designed to resist water, drinks and friction. Rubbing at them with a tissue or a dry wipe mostly rubs your lips raw. Oil breaks these formulas down, and a little waiting does the rest.
Why long-wear color is hard to remove
Long-lasting lipsticks contain film-forming ingredients and a high level of pigment, with little oil. Water-based cleansers slide over the film. Oil-based removers loosen it, so that it lifts away.
What to use
| Remover | Works on | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dual-phase eye and lip remover (shake first) | Liquid mattes, long-wear bullets | Designed for stubborn makeup |
| Cleansing balm or cleansing oil | Everything | Massage on dry lips, then emulsify with water |
| Plain petrolatum or a thick lip balm | Most long-wear formulas | Gentle and widely available |
| Micellar water | Ordinary lipsticks | Often not strong enough alone for long-wear formulas |
Look for fragrance-free removers if your lips are sensitive.
Step by step
- Apply the remover generously to your lips. Use a soaked cotton pad pressed on the lips, or massage in a balm with a fingertip.
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds. Give it time to dissolve the film.
- Massage lightly in small circles. The color will start to break up.
- Wipe from the outer edges towards the center with a damp cotton pad or a soft cloth. This stops color from spreading onto the surrounding skin.
- Repeat if color remains. A second gentle pass is better than one rough one.
- Clean the corners and the lip line with a cotton swab.
- Cleanse your face as usual to remove oily residue. See Nighttime Skincare Routine: What to Apply and When.
- Apply lip balm straight away.
Removing a stain that lingers
Tints and strong reds can leave color in the lips after the product is gone.
- Apply a thick layer of balm or petrolatum and leave it for a few minutes, then wipe gently.
- Use a soft, damp cloth with light circular movements.
- Accept a faint tint. It fades by itself within a day, and chasing it with scrubs damages the skin.
What to avoid
- Scrubbing with a dry tissue or wipe.
- Harsh lip scrubs on lips that are already dry from matte formulas.
- Rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover or toothpaste. They irritate and dry the lips.
- Picking at flaking liquid lipstick. It pulls skin away with it.
- Wiping outward, which smears color across your chin.
Caring for lips afterwards
Long-wear formulas are drying, so aftercare matters.
- Apply a thick, fragrance-free balm or ointment before bed.
- Give your lips balm-only days between long-wear days.
- If lips are flaky the next morning, soften them with balm before any gentle exfoliation. See How to Prep Your Lips Before Applying Lipstick.
- Use a balm with SPF 30 or higher in the daytime.
If your lips are often sore after lipstick
Stinging, peeling or swelling can be a sign of irritation or allergy to an ingredient such as fragrance, flavor or a dye. Stop using the product. If it happens with several products or does not settle, see a doctor or dermatologist.
Removing it away from home
Carry a small pot of plain balm. Apply a thick layer, wait a minute and wipe with a tissue. It will not be perfect, but it is far gentler than rubbing.
Reapplying over old color
If you plan to put on a fresh coat, remove the old one fully first. Layering new long-wear lipstick over a patchy old layer flakes and looks uneven.

Frequently asked questions
What removes long-lasting lipstick best?
An oil-based remover, cleansing balm or plain petrolatum, left on for about a minute before wiping.
Can I use coconut oil or olive oil to remove lipstick?
Kitchen oils can dissolve lipstick, but they are not made for the face and may not suit everyone. A cleansing balm or petrolatum is a more predictable choice.
How do I get lipstick stain off my lips?
Leave a thick layer of balm on for a few minutes and wipe with a soft, damp cloth. A remaining tint will fade within a day.
