When you shape and fill your eyebrows well, the whole face looks more balanced, even without other makeup. The aim is not to draw a new pair of brows but to tidy and gently define the ones you have. Brows are often described as sisters, not twins: close is good enough.
Step 1: Map your natural shape
You need a straight edge, such as a thin makeup brush or a pencil.
| Point | How to find it |
|---|---|
| Start | Hold the brush vertically along the side of your nose. The brow should begin where the brush meets it |
| Arch | Angle the brush from the side of the nostril through the outer edge of the iris while you look straight ahead. The highest point of the brow sits here |
| Tail | Angle the brush from the side of the nostril to the outer corner of the eye. The brow should end where the brush crosses it |
Mark each point lightly with a brow pencil. The tail should finish level with, or slightly higher than, the start. A tail that drops lower makes the eye look droopy.
Step 2: Tidy, do not thin
- Brush the hairs upward with a spoolie.
- Trim only the hairs that extend well above the top line, using small scissors. Cut one hair at a time.
- Tweeze stray hairs that fall clearly outside your marked shape, mainly below the brow and between the brows.
- Step back from the mirror often. A magnifying mirror encourages over-plucking.
Tweezing tips
- Tweeze after a shower, when the skin is soft.
- Pull the skin gently taut and pluck in the direction the hair grows.
- Leave the top edge of the brow alone, apart from obvious strays.
- If you are unsure about a hair, leave it. Brows that are repeatedly over-plucked may not grow back fully.
Waxing and threading are best left to a trained professional. A facial trimmer is a gentle option for fine hairs. See Facial Trimmer Buying Guide: Features and Cleaning.
Step 3: Choose a product
| Product | Result | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fine pencil | Hair-like strokes, precise | Sparse areas, tails, beginners |
| Powder with an angled brush | Soft, diffused fullness | Filling a brow that already has shape |
| Tinted gel | Color, hold and a little thickness | Full brows that need grooming only |
| Clear gel | Hold without color | Unruly hairs; setting other products |
| Pomade | Strong, defined brows | Very sparse brows; long wear |
| Brow pen | Fine, tint-like strokes | Gaps; long wear |
Step 4: Pick the right shade
- Fair or blonde hair: one to two shades darker than your hair, in a soft taupe.
- Brown hair: close to your hair color or slightly lighter.
- Black hair: dark brown or soft black. Pure black can look harsh.
- Red hair: warm brown or auburn.
- Gray or white hair: soft gray or taupe.
Cool, ashy tones usually look more natural than warm, reddish ones.
Step 5: Fill
- Brush the hairs up and out.
- Start at the arch and tail, where brows are usually thinnest and can take the most color.
- Draw short, light strokes in the direction of hair growth.
- Use what is left on the pencil or brush for the front of the brow, with upward flicks. Keep the front softer than the tail.
- Brush through with a spoolie to blend.
- Set with clear or tinted gel.
Common mistakes
- Drawing a hard, square front.
- Using a shade that is too dark.
- Making a solid block of color with no visible hairs.
- Over-plucking the arch.
- Trying to make both brows identical.
Brow shape and face shape
- Round face: a slightly higher arch adds length.
- Long face: a flatter brow adds width.
- Square face: a soft, rounded arch balances a strong jaw.
- Heart-shaped face: a gently curved brow softens the forehead.
Stay close to your natural shape. Small changes are the most flattering.
Safety
Never use hair dye on your eyebrows at home. Dyes for the scalp are not approved for the eye area and can injure the eyes. If you want tinted brows, see a qualified professional and have a patch test first.

Frequently asked questions
Should I fill in my eyebrows every day?
Only if you like to. Full brows may just need brushing and a little gel. Sparse brows benefit from a light fill.
Is pencil or powder better for natural-looking brows?
Powder gives the softest result on brows that already have hair. A fine pencil is better for drawing hair-like strokes in gaps.
How often should I tweeze my eyebrows?
Removing strays once a week or so keeps the shape. Daily plucking makes it easy to remove too much.
