Product Expiry Tracking

Beauty Product Expiry Tracker: Track Dates and Label Guidance

List your beauty products with the dates you opened them to see a use-by date for each, the days left, and which products are past their period after opening.

Write the type, the name and the date you opened it, with commas between them. You can add the months from the open-jar symbol on the pack. Example: serum, Vitamin C, 2026-07-01, 6

Types: mascara, eyeliner, pencil, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, lip gloss, cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream, sunscreen, mask, shampoo, conditioner, styling, body lotion, nail polish, perfume, sponge, other.

The beauty product expiry tracker keeps a list of what you have opened and when, and tells you which products to finish soon and which are past their time.

What this tool does

For each product, it adds a number of months to the date you opened it. The months come from the pack, if you enter them, or from a typical figure for that kind of product. The result is a table sorted by urgency. The list is saved in your own browser and is not stored on the website.

What you enter

One product on each line: the type, the name and the date you opened it, with commas between them. You can add the number of months from the pack as a fourth part.

Example lineMeaning
mascara, Black Lengthening, 2026-08-15Uses the usual 3 months for mascara
serum, Vitamin C, 2026-07-01, 6Uses 6 months, read from the pack

Write dates as year-month-day. The list may have up to 100 lines. A name may have up to 80 characters and cannot contain a comma. Months may be from 1 to 60.

Usual months after opening

24Powder makeup such as blush, bronzer and eyeshadow, and nail polish
36Perfume

These are common general figures. They are not taken from your product.

How the result is worked out

  • Use by = the opening date plus the months. If that day does not exist in the new month, the last day of the month is used: a product opened on 31 January with 1 month is due on 28 or 29 February.
  • Days left = the number of days from today to the use-by date.
  • Status: "Past" when the date has gone, "to use within 30 days" for 0 to 30 days, and fine otherwise.
  • A type that is not recognized is counted as Other, with 12 months, and the result tells you which words were not recognized.

Messages you may see

  • "Enter your products." when the list is empty.
  • "Line 1 needs a type, a name and the date it was opened, with commas between them."
  • "Line 2: write the date as year-month-day, for example 2026-08-15."
  • "Line 3: 2027-01-01 is in the future."
  • "Line 4: the number of months must be a whole number from 1 to 60."

How to use it

  1. Write the opening date on each product with a marker or a small sticker.
  2. Type one line for each product, and select "Check my products".
  3. Finish or replace what is marked as past or due.
  4. Add a line whenever you open something new. "Clear the saved list" removes the list from this browser.

Worked example

Three lines: a mascara opened on 15 August 2026, a vitamin C serum opened on 1 July 2026 with 6 months from the pack, and a moisturizer opened on 31 January 2026.

The use-by dates are 15 November 2026 for the mascara, 1 January 2027 for the serum and 31 January 2027 for the moisturizer. The table lists the mascara first, because it is due soonest.

Limits and assumptions

The open-jar symbol on the pack, with a number and the letter M, is the period after opening and comes before any typical figure. A printed expiry date applies even to an unopened product: use whichever date comes first. For sunscreen, follow the printed expiry date. Stop using any product that changes in smell, color or texture, whatever the date, and replace eye makeup after an eye infection. Frequently asked questions

What does 12M on a product mean?

It is the period after opening: the product is intended to be used within 12 months of the day you first open it. The symbol is a small open jar.

Why does mascara have such a short life?

The wand goes from your lashes back into the tube every day, which carries bacteria into a dark, moist product used close to the eye. About three months is the usual advice.

Where is my list saved?

In the storage of the browser you are using, on your own device. It does not move to another device, and it is lost if you clear the browser's data.
