Hydrating Face Masks: Ingredients, Types, and Value

How sheet, cream, gel and overnight masks differ, which ingredients actually hydrate, and how to judge whether a mask is worth the cost.

Hydrating face masks promise a burst of moisture and a rested look in fifteen minutes. They can deliver a pleasant, temporary boost: skin looks plumper, and fine dry lines soften for a while. They are an optional extra, though. A mask does broadly what a good moisturizer does, in a more concentrated or occlusive form.

What we looked at

We compared mask types by format, typical ingredients and cost per use, and checked general claims against dermatology guidance on moisturizing. Nothing here comes from first-hand trials of individual masks.

How a hydrating mask works

  1. It puts a generous layer of water and humectants on the skin.
  2. The sheet, the gel or the thick cream slows evaporation.
  3. For the minutes or hours that it stays on, the outer layer of skin absorbs more water than it would from a thin layer of lotion.

The effect lasts from a few hours to a day. Lasting hydration still depends on your daily cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen.

Ingredients that hydrate

  • Humectants: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, panthenol, aloe, betaine, urea, polyglutamic acid.
  • Emollients and occlusives, in cream and overnight masks: squalane, shea butter, ceramides, dimethicone.
  • Soothing ingredients: allantoin, colloidal oatmeal, centella extracts.

Moisturizer Ingredients: Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives explains these groups, and How to Use Hyaluronic Acid in Your Skincare Routine covers hyaluronic acid.

Ingredients to be careful with

  • Fragrance and essential oils, which are common in masks and sit on the skin for a long time.
  • Alcohol high on the list.
  • Acids, retinol or vitamin C, in a mask sold as "hydrating", if your skin is sensitive.
  • Long lists of plant extracts, if you are prone to reactions.

How to use a hydrating mask

  1. Cleanse your face.
  2. Apply the mask to slightly damp skin.
  3. Leave it on for the stated time. Do not let a sheet mask dry on your face, because a dry sheet can draw moisture back out.
  4. Remove it, or pat in what is left.
  5. Follow with moisturizer, to hold the hydration in.

Once or twice a week is plenty. Use one before an event, after a flight, or when your skin feels tight.

Judging value

Masks vary greatly in price. To compare them:

  • Sheet masks are single-use, so the price per mask is the cost per use.
  • Jar or tube masks give many uses. Divide the price by the number of uses, which is roughly the volume in milliliters divided by 5 to 10 ml per application.
  • Overnight masks use less per application, and often work out cheapest.
FormatTypical uses per packWaste
Sheet mask1Sachet and sheet each time
Jar, 50 mlAbout 5 to 10One container
Overnight mask, 50 mlAbout 15 to 25One container

A lower-cost alternative

Apply a hydrating serum to damp skin, follow with a thicker layer of your usual moisturizer, and leave it on overnight. For many people, the result is close to that of a mask. See Choosing a Moisturizer: A Guide for Every Skin Type.

Claims to read calmly

  • "Instant plumping" describes a temporary effect of hydration.
  • "Detox" and "purifying" are marketing words.
  • "Clinically proven" depends on what was tested, and how.
  • Collagen in a mask moisturizes the surface. It does not become collagen in your skin.

Hygiene

Use clean hands, or a spatula, for jar masks. Do not reuse a sheet mask, and do not share masks.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use a hydrating face mask?

Once or twice a week is enough for most people. More often is fine if your skin enjoys it and the mask is fragrance-free and gentle.

Are sheet masks better than cream masks?

Neither is better. Sheet masks are convenient and cooling. Cream and overnight masks are richer and cost less per use.

Do I need to moisturize after a face mask?

Yes. A moisturizer afterwards seals in the water that the mask has added.
