Lipstick Finishes: Matte, Satin, Glossy, and Sheer

What matte, satin, glossy and sheer lipstick finishes look and feel like, how long each lasts and which lips they suit.

Lipstick finishes describe how a lipstick looks on the lips once it is applied: flat or shiny, opaque or see-through. Finish affects how the color appears, how comfortable it feels, how long it lasts and how much upkeep it needs. Choosing the right one is as important as choosing the shade.

Matte

Matte lipstick has a lot of pigment and little oil, so it does not reflect light.

  • Pros: strong color, long wear, little transfer once set.
  • Cons: can feel dry, shows flakes and fine lines, and can make lips look a little smaller.
  • Best for: bold color, long days, events.
  • Tips: prepare your lips first. See How to Prep Your Lips Before Applying Lipstick. Newer "velvet" or "soft matte" formulas are more comfortable than traditional mattes.

Satin and cream

Satin sits between matte and gloss, with a gentle sheen.

  • Pros: comfortable, flattering on most lips, good color.
  • Cons: transfers onto cups and needs reapplying after meals.
  • Best for: everyday wear and dry or mature lips.

Glossy

Glossy finishes reflect the most light.

  • Pros: makes lips look fuller and smoother.
  • Cons: short wear, can feel sticky, hair catches in it, and color can travel beyond the lip line.
  • Best for: thin lips, a fresh look, layering over other lipsticks.

Sheer

Sheer lipsticks let your natural lip color show through.

  • Pros: very easy to wear and to apply without a mirror, forgiving of mistakes, moisturizing.
  • Cons: less impact and short wear.
  • Best for: beginners, casual days and trying a new color family.

Other finishes you may see

  • Metallic and frost: contain shimmer. They catch the light but can emphasize dry texture.
  • Stain: leaves color in the lips with almost no texture. See Lip Tint vs Lipstick vs Lip Gloss: Key Differences.
  • Lacquer or vinyl: a liquid lipstick with strong color and high shine.
  • Balm: a tinted lip balm with the lightest color.

Which finish for which lips?

  • Dry or chapped lips: satin, sheer or balm. Avoid drying mattes until lips are smooth.
  • Thin lips: satin and gloss add the look of fullness. Dark mattes can make lips look smaller.
  • Full lips: any finish. Matte gives definition.
  • Mature lips with fine lines: satin or cream, with a lip liner to prevent feathering. See How to Reduce Lipstick Smudging and Transfer.
  • Uneven lip tone: opaque satin or matte gives the most even color.

How finish changes a shade

The same pigment reads differently in each finish. Matte looks deeper and more intense. Gloss and sheer versions look lighter and softer. If a color feels too strong in the tube, try it in a sheerer finish before giving up on it. How to Choose Lipstick for Your Skin Undertone helps you choose the color itself.

Changing the finish of a lipstick you own

  • Matte to satin: dab a little balm over the top, or apply balm first.
  • Satin to matte: blot with a tissue, then press a little translucent powder through a single layer of tissue.
  • Any to glossy: add a clear gloss in the center of the lips.
  • Any to sheer: tap it on with a fingertip and blend.

Frequently asked questions

Which lipstick finish lasts the longest?

Matte and stain finishes last longest, because they contain less oil and set on the lips.

Is matte lipstick bad for dry lips?

It is not harmful, but it can feel uncomfortable and highlight flakes. Use a balm beforehand, or choose a satin finish on dry days.

What finish makes lips look fuller?

Glossy and satin finishes reflect light and make lips look fuller. A dab of gloss in the center of the lower lip adds to the effect.
