Liquid vs Bullet Lipstick: Finish and Application

How liquid and bullet lipsticks differ in finish, wear, comfort and ease of use, and which to choose for different occasions.

Liquid vs bullet lipstick is a choice between staying power and comfort. A bullet is the classic twist-up stick. A liquid lipstick comes in a tube with a wand, like a gloss, and often dries to a long-wearing finish. They can deliver the same color with a very different feel.

The basis of this comparison

The comparison reflects how these two formats are usually formulated and what their makers claim about wear and finish. It is not a record of wear tests by ArniSun.

Bullet lipstick

  • Made of: waxes, oils and pigment, molded into a stick.
  • Finishes: matte, satin, cream, sheer and glossy.
  • Feel: comfortable. Creamy to slightly dry, depending on the finish.
  • Wear: two to six hours. Transfers onto cups.
  • Application: straight from the bullet, or with a brush.

Liquid lipstick

  • Made of: pigment in a fluid base with film-forming ingredients.
  • Finishes: most often matte. Also satin, glossy and vinyl.
  • Feel: goes on wet. Matte formulas dry down and can feel tight.
  • Wear: long. Matte liquids can last through meals, with little transfer.
  • Application: a doe-foot wand or a brush. Precise, and less forgiving.

Applying a bullet lipstick

  1. Prepare your lips. See How to Prep Your Lips Before Applying Lipstick.
  2. Line, if you want a crisp edge.
  3. Apply from the center outward.
  4. Blot, and reapply for more wear.

Applying a liquid lipstick

  1. Start with smooth, bare lips. Balm underneath stops matte liquids from setting, so blot it off completely.
  2. Wipe excess product off the wand.
  3. Outline the lips with the tip, then fill in.
  4. Apply one thin coat. Thick layers crack and peel.
  5. Keep your lips apart until it is fully dry.
  6. If you make a mistake, correct it at once with a cotton swab. It is much harder when dry.

Comfort tips for liquid mattes

  • Exfoliate and moisturize your lips the night before.
  • Do not layer when touching up. Remove what is left first, or add only to the center.
  • Avoid oily foods, which break the formula down.
  • Give your lips balm-only days.

Hygiene and shelf life

A liquid lipstick's wand goes back into the tube after touching your lips, so do not share it. Bullets can be wiped clean. Both generally last 12 to 18 months after opening. Discard any lipstick that smells rancid or has changed in texture.

Frequently asked questions

Does liquid lipstick last longer than regular lipstick?

Usually. Matte liquid formulas set on the lips and resist transfer. They can feel drier.

Is liquid lipstick bad for dry lips?

Matte liquids can emphasize dryness and feel tight. Creamy bullets or tinted balms are more comfortable for dry lips.

Should I wear lip balm under liquid lipstick?

Apply balm beforehand, and then blot it off fully. Balm left on the lips stops matte liquid formulas from setting.
